My book club has been going strong since April which is very exciting! We each take turns picking books every month. So far the picks have been mostly basic thrillers, some romance and historical fiction. I prefer lit fic and science/nature non fiction.
What do you think would be a good choice for me to challenge my more beginner members without it being too heavy, or containing too much complex language. I was thinking Cutting For Store by Abraham Verghese or something along those lines?

Lab Girl, by Hope Jahren. An autobiography of a biologist that will give you interesting facts about plants and trees between chapters.
As great as Cutting For Stone is, I would try to keep a book club pick under 350 pages. I’m limiting to publishing dates in 2022 or earlier to hopefully make the books easier to access for cheap or free.
Marriage of a Thousand Lies by SJ Sindu
The Measure by Nikki Erlick
Sorrow and Bliss by Meg Mason
Nothing to See Here by Kevin Wilson
Funny Boy by Shyam Selvadurai
Home Fire by Kamila Shamsie
The Death of Vivek Oji by Akwaeke Emezi
Washington Black by Esi Edugyan
Mostly Dead Things by Kristen Arnett
I agree with smtae, Cutting For Stone is a bit lengthy. I second the Lab Girl rec, and also suggest Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer.
Building Your Compass by Edon Kleine would be great for a book club because it has stand alone topics that are great for some brainstorming and pressure testing of ideas.
