The Gone series. Really good but some of it’s pretty messed up.
Think like Lord of the Flies but the kids have X-Men like powers.

A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray was a favorite growing up, the main characters are introduced to magic.

Older YA: Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor, Younger YA: Inkheart by Cornelia Funke
Adult: The Magicians by Lev Grossman (ymmv dependent on if you need a likable protagonist), City of Brass by SA Chakraborty (a nice departure from western-inspired fantasy), The Water Dancer by Ta-Nehisi Coates (centered on slavery in pre-Civil War America)
