I haven’t read a lot of science fiction but quite liked Ted Chiang’s short story collections, *Exhalation* and *Stories of Your Life and Others* (republished as *Arrival* after the film).
Also, Ishiguro’s *Never Let Me Go* has a subtle sci-fi element. From the outset the reader knows something is a little off about the characters’ situation, with increasing hints, until it’s fully stated about two thirds in. Another of his novels, *Klara and the Sun*, is more obviously sci-fi in that the narrator is an AI child companion, but I didn’t like it nearly as much.
