I’m sick of books with a bland everywoman protagonist that anyone could project themselves onto. Oh, she’s resourceful and brave and kind and her only flaw is she’s not very physically competent? I’m sure she is. Boring!
Give me some books where the protagonist is well defined, flawed, and super interesting! Give me some unconventional and memorable female protagonists! I want to be able to mentally pick her out of a crowd of characters from every other book I’ve read.
I’m not the biggest fan of romance, so if present I’d love for it to be a minor subplot at best.
Thanks in advance!

Deep Secret and Fire and Hemlock by Diana Wynne Jones
Tiffany Aching series by Terry Pratchett (one of my favorite book protagonists of all time)
Oh, you want Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir for *sure*.
Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao is also a fun one, along with Scholomance by Naomi Novik, if you can handle unlikable bordering on or sometimes actually violent (it’s my personal fave)
