I was scouring threads about favorite murder mystery books but it occurred to me to perhaps avoid the most popular for this reason.

Maybe I should go for a recent release?

We’re in Australia, Aussie authors or international are fine.

Other criteria – murder mystery-esque (ie doesn’t have to be only literally murders), a gripping read. Nothing too cheesy, and preferably doesn’t feature heavy alcohol use. Would be cool if it is set somewhere interesting. Probably modern day setting. That’s it really.

    Thanks!

Just read The Guest List by Lucy Foley. Good characterization, interesting setting, and fun plot.

    2. Oooo how many murder mysteries do they read? Personally I loveeeeee the thirteen problems (tuesday murder club) by agatha christie. Features 13 short stories to do with murder, all shared in-story. (So the story continues around the smaller stories the characters tell) the main story takes place in 1930s england (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Thirteen_Problems), but the individual stories take place in a few places around europe

Tommy and Tuppence by Agatha Christie. It’s much lesser known than like Poirot or Miss Marple by the same author and definitely an underrated gem. It’s not modern though. If I remember correctly it’s 1950s.
