Can you suggest to me what this book might be?

I feel like my title us maybe trying to be a little bit sneaky but I am desperate. I am trying to find a book that I read as a kid, and I just can't figure out what it is. I only have one memory of a scene where the main guy who i think is a detective is in a cellar and he hears like this thumping noise coming from a closet. It is described as though someone is approaching the door to it from the inside from really far away and getting closer. So there was a supernatural element to it. I

I have recently read all of the Dresden files, so I know it isn't that. Any help at all would be hugely appreciated
