I adore the Narnia movies and when I was an early teen I loved the Dorothy Must Die book series. I’m looking for something like that, but for a 22 year old girl. Thanks!!
The House in the Cerulean Sea, or anything else by TJ Klune
The Hobbit, or maybe the Lord of the Rings
I’m currently reading Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson and enjoying it.
Suzanna Clark has two books: Piranesi (I’ve read) and Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrel. I haven’t read the latter but sounds right up your alley.
If you can find these second hand so he doesn’t benefit from them directly, I’d suggest multiple books by Neil Gaiman: The Ocean at the End of the Lane, Good Omens, Neverwhere, and Stardust all scratched that itch you describe. I’d say start with Neverwhere or Ocean and go from there.

I’ll second Mistborn. If you like that, check out Warbreaker by the same author. If you REALLY like his writing you can dig into Stormlight Archives.
Neverwhere by Gaiman is directly inspired by Narnia. Also has the benefit of being a complete standalone as far as I know.
I greatly enjoyed Throne of Glass (series) lots of magical battles and strange creatures, just be warned there are a lot of “spicy” scenes in the last three books.
I enjoyed Ninth House a lot, it has a sequel and a third book in the works. It’s very dark, like blood sacrifice black magic stuff.
