I've had so many 5 star reads in this genre. It's so enjoyable when it works well. The following were amazing for me (sorry for the long list 😅. Hoping to spare people the trouble of recommending these books specifically.)
Into Thin Air and Under the Banner of Heaven by Jon krakauer
Endurance by Alfred Lansing
Into the Kingdom of Ice by Hampton Sides
In the Heart of the Sea by Nathaniel Philbrick
Prairie Fires by Caroline Fraser
A Woman of No Importance by Sonia Putnell
The Zookeeper's Wife by Diane Ackerman
The Indifferent Stars Above by Daniel James Brown
I also loved everything by David Grann and Laura Hillenvrand and multiple books by Erik Larson, although I recently tried Isaac's Storm and wasn't feeling it.
I don't really mind too much about subject! I find a really talented author can get me to find lunexpected things fascinating 🙂
