Based on the suggestions i am going to start with Crime and Punishment as my first Dostoevsky's work, but there are plenty of translations available. I am wondering who did justice to his writing without loosing the main idea behind the story?

I’m reading Constance Garnett’s translation. It’s a little weird at times (because it’s old) but I’d say it’s really good and it keeps me intrigued. Of course, I don’t know Russian so I can’t compare it to the original, but I really enjoy reading it. I remember reading in the past a different translation of Notes From The Underground and struggling to understand it, I can’t remember whose it was. It was the one on Project Gutenberg, so I wouldn’t recommend that one.
