Can you recommend some books about protagonists who learn that their parents are evil?
It can be complete fiction, biographies, or partially inspired by real events. The protagonists can be any age.
I am curious about books where the protagonist learns one or both of their parents are criminal (from organised crime to white collar crime) or engage in legally but morally questionable activities (like owning sweatshops, denying medical claims, etc) or are part of dictatorial / authoritarian regimes.
I am particularly interested in the contrast between a decent behaviour at home and an immoral behaviour outside the home, and how the protagonists perceive it.
I am not interested in parents who behave reprehensively at home, too – e.g. not interested in stories of criminals who hit their wives and children.
Something like: my dad seems so loving and caring – yet he runs the secret police in our dictatorial state, or launders money for the drug cartels, or is an organised crime boss, or his business empire is based on sweatshops which employ children in poor countries, etc.
