Hi! I’m looking for a series to really suck me in but I’m tired of getting recommended books based off of “spice levels”. I want something that doesn’t rely on the romance to be good. I enjoy horror, thrillers, and fantasy, but I’m open to anything. TIA!

Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver. It’s a retelling of David Copperfield that stuck with me for a few months afterward, which is pretty unusual for me. There’s a bit of romance, but it’s not the driving force.

    2. If you are open to reading mysteries then I suggest either Peter Grainger or Anthony Horowitz. Grainger has two series that actually exist in the same literary universe; DC Smith Investigation and Kings Lake Investigations. Horowitz has many series but the two I can recommend are his Susan Ryland series and his Hawthorne and Horowitz series. While it is not like romance is non-existent in any of the books, I wouldn’t think there was any need to rate them on the spiciness level.

My recommendation for a fantasy series admittedly has some romance in it, but romance is not the point of the story. I don’t read a lot of fantasy, but TJ Klune’s The House in the Cerulean Sea, and Somewhere Beyond the Sea were a series I enjoyed.
