Sorry I'm bad at titles.
Recently I've loved books by Jennifer Egan. So far I've read A Visit from the Goon Squad, the Candy House, Look at Me, and The Keep. I really love her writing. I also love how her books explore ideas like our relationship with technology, society, image culture, etc. I've also read J.G. Ballard's short story collections (and a few of his novels), and like the prescience/perspective of those too.
I read Bliss Montage by Ling Ma and loved those stories as well. (I've also read Severance, which was okay, but I didn't love it as much as Bliss Montage). I've already recently read Pastoralia by George Saunders and loved those. I like DFW's essay collections (Consider the Lobster and Both Flesh and Not being the two I've read).
I like satires as well, like Tom Wolfe's Bonfire of the Vanities. White Noise by DeLillo cracked me up.
Books that are poorly written (I know, somewhat subjective), beat you over the head with themes in a really obvious way / treat the reader like an idiot, or are misogynistic are turnoffs for me.
I know not all of these necessarily connect, but hopefully some of them spark some ideas! Thank you
