I’ve just discovered Hiaasen, reading Bad Monkey which I really enjoyed. Keen to explore further, so wondered if anyone had any suggestions as to an order in which to tackle his books, any must-reads, etc?

Equally, if there are any similar authors I may enjoy then feel free to suggest away!

    Thank you.

    1. I enjoyed the earlier works much more than the later ones, so I’d start with: **Double Whammy, Skin Tight, and Native Tongue**. They are fantastically funny and have that trademark Hiaasen dialogue. Also, they have plenty of Skink and Jim Tile.

I’ve read most of his and while there is some continuity between a few books they can all be read as standalone stories. The recurring characters just pop in and out for the most part. Bad Monkey book is sooooo much better than the series.

I read them as they were published. The Skink books are my favorite, but I’ve read most of his adult fiction. The earlier books still crack me up. Double Whamny and Tourist Season are my most frequent rereads.

As for other authors. Donald Westlake and Lawrence Block, especially the Bernie Rhodenbarr series, are both similar and fun. Tim Dorsey also wrote whacky Florida crime fiction. I enjoy Edna Buchanan as well, she also writes Florida crime fiction. Her Britt Montero series was fun.
