I had never heard of Jon Fosse before his Nobel Prize, so I decided to take a look at his work. In the past, I read two other Nobel winners (Gao Xingjian, José Saramago), three if take into account other categories (Ramón y Cajal). I wasn’t expecting an easy read. These Nobel laureates usually have a unique writing style and it takes time to get used to it.
I read many reviews about Trilogy. They tell that its an amazing book, that the characters are so deep, that the story is so overwhelming, that his “slow prose” is impressive… All very positive review.
Well, I hated it. I find his writing style horrifying.
I find his “slow prose” to be the writing style of a child but taken it to the absurd. Slow, boring, confusing, repetitive, … The characters buff. Their dialogues are very dull, like the talks everybody have with strangers in the elevator. The story is just fine, I think it’s beautiful and if written well, it would be a decent novella. A novella that you probably forget about soon, but entertaining.
Maybe I don’t know how to appreciate good literature, but I didn’t like it. What about ones who have read Jon Fosse’s work? Did you like it? Would you recommend it?
