My parents were woefully unprepared for raising two children. They never challenged me to build the basic skills that one needs to be a successful adult, and now, at 22, I am playing catch up. Whether it’s a memoir, self help book, or simply fiction with valuable lessons about learning the lessons you should have learned as a child, suggestions are welcome!

I don’t know if this is allowed here because it is not a book recommendation, but there is a YouTube Channel by a guy who teaches skills to people who grew up without a dad or without people who would teach them these skills, it’s called “Dad, how do I?” Not sure if this is the kind of thing you are looking for.
“How to Sew a Button” and “How to Build a Fire” by Wrin Bried are filled with handy advice from real grandparents.
“On Food and Cooking” by Harold McGee, “The Art of Simple Food” by Alice Waters, and the 1992 edition of “Mrs Beeton’s Book of Cookery and Household Management” have all come in handy for me.
I also really love “I Like You” and “Simpler Times” by Amy Sedaris. They’re very funny, but there are a lot of authentic and useful hints and tricks in there as well.
