Hi friends! I’m reading a book a week this year, and I’ve found myself falling into a bit of a trap where the only things I’ve been reading lately is queer sci fi (go read Ancillary Justice) or Romantasy (I know). I enjoy both genres much like one would enjoy watching a Transformers movie, but I should probably broaden my taste a little. I need to detox from action-movie books.
Would you be able to recommend a fiction book that compelled and challenged you, maybe one that made you think about it for weeks afterwards? Ideally I would prefer the book is 500 pages or less but recommend whatever you want 🙂 I am worried about finding some books dry after reading so many easy-pleasure novels, but I’ll challenge myself!

If on a Winter’s Night a Traveler by Italo Calvino. It’s literary fiction, and has the best first chapter ever.
Some books I still think about in a compelling/challenging way (and this is a wide, wild variety):
– Playground by Richard Powers
– Open Throat by Henry Hoke
– Tender Is the Flesh by Agustina Bazterrica
– I Who Have Never Known Men by Jacqueline Harpman
– When I Sing, Moutains Dance by Irene Solà
