    1. Winter In Sokcho (Korea), The Pachinko Parlour (Japan), and Vladivostok Circus (Russia), all by Elisa Shua Dusapin. Translated from French

    2. Egypt: The Cairo Trilogy – Naguib Mahfouz ( or Children of Gebelawi)

Turkey: My Name is Red – Orhan Pamuk

Persia: 1001 Arabian Nights, translated by Hussein Haddawy. Best translation in my opinion I won’t hear otherwise.

Ghana: Homegoing – Yaa Gyasi (ok there’s US in it too but it still counts!)

Anything by Orhan Pamuk, but my favorites are My Name is Red and A Strangeness in my Mind.

Also anything by Naguib Mahfouz.  I loved the beginning of the Cairo Trilogy, but as the characters fell away I have to admit I lost interest.  Akhenaten Dweller in Truth was beautifully written and a really interesting idea.  Children of Gebelawi is amazing.

    4. I’ve read so many books I love set in Japan – Newcomer by Higashino (mystery), The Hole by Oyamada (surreal fantasy), All the Lovers in the Night and Heaven by Kawakami (fiction)…
