I’ve slacked the last decade or so by reading primarily sci-fi and fantasy and neglecting regular fiction and would love to do some catch-up work, since I feel as though I’ve missed out.

Would love something well-written and memorable. Looking for something more positive and hopeful. Not a fan of lots of cussing or sex scenes. If a book could possibly match the vibes of any of the films below, it’s possible I’d like it. And has anyone ever read a book that kind of reminded them a little of the show The Office?? More serious tone fiction that is just an excellent read is also welcome.

I’m trying to find my niche in regular fiction, so if you have something you think is too good to miss, let’s hear it.

Movies that I like that might possibly help:

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

50 First Dates (though I’m not a fan of romance or gross humor)

    Stranger than Fiction

A Silent Voice (brilliant but I’m not looking for YA fiction)

    Amelie (without the sexual references)

    Your Name

Not into horror and nothing dark, please

P.S. I also have an interest in reading the following graphic novels: Maus and Persepolis – reading tastes are all over the place

    1. Anxious People by Fredrik Backman may scatch your itch? It’s humorous and hopeful with plenty of incredibly profound quotes.

    2. You might like Shrines of Gaiety by Kate Atkinson. It’s set in flapper-era London, where a strong and ambitious woman named Nellie Coker has set up a series of not-quite-legal nightclubs. Her goal is to get out of poverty and make sure her children will never experience it either.

I thought you might like it because it’s got multiple perspectives, with each character feeling really distinct. It’s not exactly like the office, but the way you get to hear each person’s perspectives does remind me of the little interviews in the show. There’s also a minor romance plotline, but nothing sexual happens.
