I am looking for a book that takes any real world religion and turns it upside down, revealing that the flavour of supernatural beings native to this religion (gods, angels, elves, djinns…) are actually aliens that have visited Earth in the past and will be visiting again in the course of the book — that is, if they ever left.
Some examples that have come to mind:
- Childhood's End by Arthur Clarke
- Lord of Light by Roger Zelazny
But these examples do not exactly match what I am looking for. I am looking for something that matches a real world religion so closely and turns it upside down so effectively that it would risk offending a sincere believer.
It does not have to be intentional fiction — it may as well be good faith alternative history. The starker the contrast between the serious presentation and the outlandish content, the better.

*Gods* by Peter Levenda is explicitly about this, but it’s not what I’d call fiction. More of a what-if Occam’s Razor for religious belief in general.
