My friend (23F) has been in a toxic relationship for about a year and I no longer know what to do to try and help her see how awful this guy is, so my friend suggested we start a little book club and read a book with a similar guy whose toxicity is pointed out in the book. We’re hoping seeing similarities to her own experiences on the page will help show her that her relationship is borderline emotional abuse.

For specifics, her bf doesn’t communicate well and blows up at her over things she didn’t know he wanted/didn’t want her to do (telling certain friends about their relationship early on, posting about him on socials etc.), walks out during arguments, breaks up with her over these arguments sometimes and then only takes her back if she apologizes even when she didn’t start the fight, and expects her to drop everything and move hundreds of miles away because he got a job in a new city even though they don’t live together and she has a job in the current city. We’re looking for a fiction romance book because that’s what we normally read and we want to keep this subtle (not like a self help book or something), so anything with any of those things as elements that are pointed out as toxic in the book would be amazing! Please help!

    1. Why Does He Do That by Lundy Bancroft is free + available as PDF. Not subtle at all but super eye opening

It Ends With Us is more typical mainstream romance, I’ve seen mixed things about its depiction of abuse, and it’s maybe more physical/overt than your friend is experiencing, but it would definetly be more under the radar, esp with the movie coming out recenly.
