Tormented characters

I'm currently going through a hard time. When I've struggled in the past, I've always found some semblance of solace in reading Dostoevsky's novels because of how tormented most of the characters are. This time I want to expand my resources, so I'm asking the kind people of r/booksuggestions to suggest some books in which the characters are somewhat as tortured as those in Dostoevsky's novels.
