Hi! So I recently got back into reading but I'm having a difficult time finding books that are enjoyable to read. In a lot of the ones I've tried recently I've found myself genuinely distracted by the author themselves.
Some of my all time favourite books have been: The Picture of Dorian Grey, The Bell Jar, Frankenstein, The Help, and Brave New World.
Recently I've enjoyed True Reconcilliation and What My Bones Know but I'm having a hard time finding fiction I like.
Books I've read recently that I've disliked are:
The Passenger (The lack of dialogue formatting I find less stylistic and more just plain annoying, I end up having to read the same few likes repeatedly just to parse out who is speaking)
The Radium Girls (The body horror elements were chilling but the physical descriptions of every characters hair, faith, and skintone, grew tiresome)
The Maid (Came out of that thinking the author was ableist and more then a little racist)
Incidents Around the House (Author has mommy issues and has never met an 8 year old)
Bloom (Sucks. Bad. Bad author trying to write a brilliant english professor/poet. Uses words like "unctuous" on the same page as she describes tiktok trends. Somehow pretentious without being smart enough to have anything worth being pretentious about.)
I really would like to read something that feels polished and has that beautiful, almost musical element to the prose. I don't enjoy fantasy but I can get into most everything else.
