Hey everyone… I just started reading and I’m still figuring out what kinds of books I’m into. I’ve read a lot of the popular, trending ones- It Ends With Us, Verity, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, The Silent Patient, and others you’d typically find on the shelf at Target. They were entertaining, but most of them weren’t really my cup of tea- The Silent Patient was the only one that really stood out to me.
On the other hand, I love TV shows and movies that explore weird, artificial realities and themes of surveillance and control. Severance is one of my favorite shows, and The Truman Show really stuck with me because of its eerie, manipulated reality. As for books, I love 1984 by George Orwell- something about the surveillance, manipulation, and totalitarian control just fascinates me. I’m drawn to stories that explore power, control, and the struggle for individual freedom in a world where reality is distorted.
So, does anyone have any book recommendations along those lines? I’m open to anything so no bad answers- I’m just trying to find what truly piques my interest!

The easiest thing to do (at least, imo) is to go into Google and just search “books like 1984” or any other titles you end up enjoying along the way.
Not all of them will be hits, but you’ll find a good list of titles, be able to read synopses, and start a nice little want-to-read list 🙂
Congrats on starting your journey into literature! I would love to hear what other suggest, but here are a few I’d add:
Fahrenheit 451
The Handmaid’s Tale
The Wool series by Hugh Howey
Sounds a bit like myself. I just got into reading last year and picked up a bunch of books from different genres not knowing what I liked.
Some of the best books I’ve read are:
Fairy tale and 11/22/63 by Stephen King – even though it’s Stephen King, these are not horror books but some of the best written novels. Fairy tale is fun and 11/22/63 is just gripping. Had me hooked the whole way through. And it has a sort of alternate reality to you.
The Will of the Many by James Islington – this unleashed my love for fantasy and I will be pursuing more in this genre.
Project Hail Mary – science fiction and I loved every second of it.
Also you can always read a synopsis of the books before picking them up to see if they appeal to you!
Here’s a suggestion from left field:
*The Assignment, or on the Observing of the Observer of the Observers* by Friedrich Dürrenmatt
