Looking for a dark mystery involving cabal/politics that essentially becomes almost horror?

I liked jack Vance’s araminta station – but I wished I could have gotten more of the whole cabal, what exactly they were doing on the island etc. the book leaned into more Vancey stuff but does anyone have a similar book that took a darker, more gruesome tone?
