I’ve been able to trudge through some books that were fine, but I love the feeling of being absolutely engrossed. Last year I read Yellowface and My Year of Rest and Relaxation and absolutely loved being in the brain of character in a completely whack situation. I read the Housemaid which kind of scratched that itch as a popcorn read, but it didn’t provide any additional commentary/criticism like the other two did for me to also mull over.
Now a year later I finished I Who Have Never Known and that is absolutely what I’m after. I don’t need an unhinged protagonist necessarily (I wouldn’t call the protagonist unhinged, she makes reasonable decisions), but rather an unhinged situation/universe.
I tried Eileen and it did not grab me. I’ve tried some thrillers but they aren’t quite weird enough and can be a bit formulaic. I think I like the litfic or speculative side of things that can be completely off the wall but also provide social commentary.
I hope this makes sense? Thanks!
