Memoirs or autobiographies by authors, writers, poets?
I've just finished my third re-reading of Stephen King's On Writing. Looking for great memoirs from other writers, stuff with wisdom about writing is welcome but not necessary.
Becoming Superman: My Journey from Poverty to Hollywood by J. Michael Straczynski
*In this dazzling memoir, the acclaimed writer behind Babylon 5, Sense8, Clint Eastwood’s Changeling and Marvel’s Thor reveals how the power of creativity and imagination enabled him to overcome the horrors of his youth and a dysfunctional family haunted by madness, murder and a terrible secret.*
*For four decades, J. Michael Straczynski has been one of the most successful writers in Hollywood, one of the few to forge multiple careers in movies, television and comics. Yet there’s one story he’s never told before: his own.*

Annie Lamott’s *Bird by Bird* is my favorite.

The writer/poet who is often accredited for starting the memoir movement is Mary Karr. Start with The Liars Club. For me, I found it addictive and fascinating. It’s raw and gritty. She has a dry and dark sense of humor and will use it while writing about her most tragic memories. Some people are put off by this. She has also written how-to books on writing. She would be my first choice for an endeavor such as yours. Good luck to you. Fun fact: she also briefly dated David Foster Wallace.
