My book club recently read Demon Copperhead (a modern retelling of David Copperfield) and James (a retelling of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn from Jim’s perspective). Are there any other books that fit this niche category of modern retellings of classic orphan tales? Non-orphan suggestions welcome as well.

Fagin The Thief by Allison Epstein is just out. It’;s not actually Oliver Twist. It’s all about Fagin, his childhood and yes he becomes an orphan. And then it’s about the how and why he came to teach stealing to other children.

Great North Child by Edith Pattou is a retelling of East of the Sun West of the Moon. Its about a girl who was switched at birth and has to find her way home. Not an orphan story but its pretty good if ur into that kinda thing. Also Pride by Ibi Zoboi is a modern Pride and Prejudice set in Brooklyn, its different from the original but still keeps the same vibe
