I pretty much only read speculative fiction like science fiction and fantasy. In recent years I've been more drawn to low stakes plots, like personal conflicts, and I feel I might limit myself with my genre choices. However I think I still need an interesting premise to explore. For example the book taking place in an interesting location or depicting people with unusual beliefs.

If you want to branch out a little, you might try Diary of a Void by Emi Yagi. It’s got a unique personal conflict. It isn’t a long book though so it won’t feel like a whole commitment if you don’t like it.
Sorry this is historical fiction, but Georgette Heyer romances are low stakes with a great sense of place. Also PG Wodehouse. I consider them candy for the brain. Well written, intelligent fluff.
Check out “A Gentleman in Moscow” – its about a rich dude stuck in a hotel for decades. No crazy plot twists or anything, just him living his life and dealing with the people around him. The hotel setting is pretty cool and you get to see how he makes the most of being trapped there.
