I love romance movies and the romantic subplots in books are sometimes my favorite part. Yet I have never read a full blown romance novel. Would love to try one but can't seem to find one that fits my tastes which are:
1) 3-dimensional flawed characters. Let them have insecurities, doubts, flaws, imperfect bodies. Overcoming/learning to accept them makes the story feel more real and that makes the romantic moments hit way harder. For me at least
Nothing against "power fantasy"/ "popcorn" romances but I already have enough pulpy crime novels on my tbr that scratch the fluffy read itch
2) lotta Yearning. I love a big yearn. For me it is the best part of any romance story. Can't explain why but it just always gets me and makes my heart swoon
3) NO FUCKING BILLIONAIRES!! Really not in the mood to sympathize with rich people right now
4) I like Spice but it isn't required. Also if Spice is the main attraction of a book then it is not for me. No judgement just not for me
5) in movies at least I prefer romantic dramas over romcoms. Think more in the mood for love and before trilogy and less like about time (although about time is a great movie). This one is more of a suggestion than the other bulletpoints. if you know of a romcom book that you think I would really like I am willing to check it out
6) I am straight but ill happily read a gay romance. Hell my favorite novel has a gay romantic subplot
Sorry for the wall of text, looking forward to your suggestions
