I’ve been gifting books to kids for many years, and have had some really well received ones over the years. I do try to put a good amount of thought into it.
I have a collection that belonged to me as a child, as well as the ones that were my kids’ most loved from when they were young. Chewed, scribbled on, broken bindings and all.
Can you suggest some that are the ones you or your loved ones found to be worthy to be kept as keepsakes? I tend to try and stay away from the absolute most popular ones (like Goodnight Moon or Where the Wild Things Are) only because I know those are top of mind and gifted frequently. And ones like Junie B Jones and Diary of a Wimpy Kid books seem more like library checkouts than ones that will still be on their shelves as adults.
From the Mixed up files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler and Shel Silverstein’s poems go over great with the 8/9 year olds, but I’m having a hard time remembering many of the children’s books that are both lasting and classic (not necessarily old).
I sometimes find myself looking for books for roughly the specific age of a child and get stumped. They’re either a little too juvenile or mature (or don’t fit the kid’s interests) for who I have in mind. And depending on the kid, it can vary widely!
Thanks for your help! I’m going to put together a list I can draw from, and I’m really looking into any age book up to about preteen years. I figure by then they’ve developed a sense of what they are drawn to and it’s easier just to find out through conversation. But expanding their library when they’re young can’t be beat! It’s when learning to love books can really take hold, and the amount of quality books out there is amazing.
