Hi I’m an older sister looking for recommendations for a book for my brother. He’s turning 15 and I want to get him a book that will keep him interested (he’s not massively into reading) while also showing him male characters he could aspire to.

I feel that with the rise of toxic influencers across social media and society in general, there’s a lot of misinformation and lack of positive male role models so I’m hoping he could find some through books.

I want there to be strong themes of feminism, kindness, healthy masculinity, being yourself, standing up for what you believe is right etc and to open his mind to the experiences of others.

He recently read the Hate U Give by Angie Thomas and loved it! Probably the first book that wasn’t compulsory for school that he actually finished so anything similar would be great.

Absolute can be female protagonists, as long as there are male characters that are good role models.

    I’m also open to biographies?

The Earthsea series has basically the most positive male role model in YA fiction that I can think of, as long as he likes fantasy. It’s about learning the dangers of power and about thinking through consequences of your action, and the author was a pretty important feminist writer. The protagonist even starts out like a shitty teen boy and grows throughout.

A lot of Tamora Pierce’s young adult fantasy series feature some awesome positive teenage and adult male characters (alongside great strong and positive female characters).
