One of my favorite stories of all time is that of the game Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty, for those who don’t play videogames or don’t plan on playing this it’s basically about this:

A guy facing death from an incurable “disease” gets offered a cure by someone they’ve never met, in exchange of saving the president of the US that’s about to crash on a hostile zone. As the story progresses you get faced with difficult choices to test how far you’d go just for a promise to save yourself, all while the people that promised to save you keep secrets and you’re left wondering who’s telling the truth, who’s not, in what side are they actually on and how are they playing you in all this.

At the end you have to choose between two of your allies while the other has to suffer a dark ending, but at this point it’s really difficult to choose since they made you like them and your life is on the line. No matter what you choose someone will suffer or lose their life, even you, and you end up learning that there’s no such things as happy ending, someone always has to pay a steep price.

It’s the having to betray your friends while not knowing who’s actually telling the truth and seeing it all unfold unto an unavoidable dark ending that gets me; the tension, the doubts, the moral consequences of your actions, your inescapable fate, etc.

My favorite thing is, a dark, twisted ending, with plot twist if possible

Any books that sound like this?
