I'm currently reading Mademoiselle de Maupin by Théophile Gautier, but I'm not enjoying it—especially D'Albert's long letters. I kept hoping it would get better, but I just don't want to finish it anymore. I'd rather start a new book.

Yes!
No, believe it or not straight to jail…… Obviously yes.
Don’t waste time reading something you hate, too many good books out there
Life’s too short to continue reading something you don’t enjoy. Also, dnf-ing a book isn’t illegal. Go read something enjoyable.
It’s perfectly okay to put down a book you’re not enjoying.
I didn’t become a big reader until I started quitting books I didn’t want to finish. I was perpetually stuck before that.
No shame in a DNF. Life is too short and there are too many books for you to enjoy.
No, when you start a book you enter a binding legal contract and must finish or face a fine of $5000 and up to 5 years of jail time.
j/k life is too short to read books you don’t enjoy. Do what you want.
Definitely. I just started one, got about 25 pages into it without liking a single thing, and put it down. It’s not worth the time spent, making yourself read something you’re not into.
Seriously, what’s going to happen if you do? Is someone going to hunt you down and lock you up? Slander you online? Take away all future reading privileges? It’s a book. Stop if you want.
I’ve done this a few times. Reading should be enjoyable! I recently stopped in the middle of the 3rd book of the Hannibal series which has 4 books. You can always go back if you truly want to ever pick it up again because sometimes a break is the best thing
Of course! If it doesn’t bring you joy, put it down.
Yup. I read way more since I started DNFing. If you aren’t enjoying it, move on.
Yes! It is totally okay.
No, the r 52 books sub will get you
Yes. Too many books; too little time
I’m getting back into reading because I’m reading “junk”. As others have said- life is short. Enjoy things.
You’re reading for pleasure, not for English class.
If you’re not enjoying it, stop.
(Note: if you ARE reading for English class you should probably finish it.)
I mean, truly not to be harsh specifically to you, but just in case anyone else reads this legitimately thinking this same thought, but what a dumb question. Who are you reading for? If it’s school, then no, finish the book. Are you reading for *gasp* enjoyment?!? Then what do you think?
I started encyclopedia E to EN and I’m exhausted but I can’t give up now.
No. Absolutely not. I’m calling the FBI
YES!!! DNF that ish
There’s this book called the bible, millions haven’t finished it yet still rave about it so hell yeah don’t waste your time reading something you don’t enjoy.
No, you have to finish it or it will always be on your night stand staring at you. You’ll move across the country and it’ll be waiting there for you. Ten years later, still there on your nightstand.
Go ahead, I won’t tell anybody. You might want to delete this post tho. . . .
OP you have free will and this kind of choice falls under that.
No you have to finish it
If a book can’t keep me interested past the 3rd chapter, I let it go. Everyone recommended The Name of the Rose to me. I gave it 7 chapters and was bored to tears. Turned it back into the library and found another book.
Be careful; your neighbors might turn you in to the library police. If apprehended, you will be booked.
No. It’s a crime and you will be punished promptly after death. Force yourself to complete read even if it brings you no joy.
