I’m looking to adapt a folklore story into a picture book as an exercise (I am a working artist). I enjoy authors like Edward Gorey and Edgar Allen Poe. I also love Guillermo Del Toro’s films and Tennessee Williams’ plays. Also love Emily Wilson’s Odyssey and, of course, Edith Hamilton’s Greek Mythology books.
I’d love to read some books that analyze and/or simply showcase folkloric stories from around the world. Ideally I’d like to read some darker, eerie stories.
Thanks!!

Disfigured by Amanda Leduc comes immediately to mind. She analyzes disabilities in Grimm tales, which are often dark/grotesque.
For analyses I’d also recommend looking up folklore and/or fairy tales studies, with a specific topic of interest and “university press” as keywords. When I was researching on fairy tales and disability that helped me a lot.
University of Colorado Press has a [folklore studies list](https://upcolorado.com/folklore-studies), for example. They have stuff like Japanese Demon Lore. You could peruse them and other [university press catalogs](https://aupresses.org/resources/aupresses-subject-area-grid/) for inspiration or find something that interests you.
Good luck!! ^^
American murder ballads & their stories by Olive Woolley Burt is a real peach 🍑
