Books that read like Japanese fiction, but that aren’t???

I LOVE Japanese fiction. But, alas, I’ve exhausted my library’s supply and have a strict no buying book policy for myself (I tend to buy and not read, but when I check a book out from the library, I do read it! Go figure!!)

Has anyone read books that they think are comparable to the Japanese slice of life genre? Looking for contemporary or historical fiction genres.
