I'd really like some books that explore religious cults and are either really informative or great stories! I'd prefer it to be about Christianity but any religion will do!

I just finished Bethany Lenz‘s memoir about her time in a charismatic Christian cult, Dinner for Vampires, and I thought it was really good. She’s obviously become very self-aware of how cults work and the book focuses on how she became sucked into it and why she couldn’t find her way out for so long.

Extraordinary Popular Delusions of Our Times by Daniel Martin has a whole section on religion and cults. He not only covers Hale Bopp, Jonestown, Moonies, Mormons, Branch Davidians, Scientologists, etc., but also faith healers and televangelists. Entertaining stuff.

*The Man-Leopard Murders: History and Society in Colonial Nigeria* by David Pratten.

In this novel, two social scientists study a cult. One of the scientists eventually became a true believer in the cult.
