I've spent so much time trying to get through his books, because he is a staple in the genre, but he's definitely not for me. My criticism is that there is too much telling (and rambling) and not enough plot. Obviously, if you love him I'm happy, but the last thing I want to feel when reading horror is boredom.
I'm open to any 3rd person horror. Preferably, more action, more tense moments, life threatening situations. Trying to move from a lover of horror movies to scary fiction. I love a good slasher.
Give me those scenes where a survivor is "-" away from the danger. The tingle down your spine when you're reading in bed at night. Twists and turns. Supernatural preferred.
Just thought there may be some in here who also didn't vibe with his writing, but then found an author that did 🙂

Maybe Clive Barker is more your type, he is also a master of the genre and his works are not usually as long as Stephen King’s.
How about Richard Bachman, The Long Walk or The Running Man
Honestly, that’s part of why I prefer his short stories, having word limits really helps keep things sharp.
She’s an older author, but I would try Daphne DuMaurier, especially Jamaica Inn and her short stories. The original story of The Birds is much scarier than the Hitchcock movie.
