I am looking for new books in the historical fiction/fiction/distopia genres. I have read the below books and have really liked all of them. I am looking for new suggestions but always hate when people recommend "classics" that are hard to get into (like the Odyssey, War and Peace, etc).

Shades of Grey and Red Side Story – Jasper Fforde
The Boy in the Striped Pajamas – John Boyne
    11/22/63 – Stephen King
The Tattooist of Aushwitz – Heather Morris
    Homegoing – Yaa Gyasi
Pillars of the Earth – Ken Follett
In the Garden of Beasts – Erik Larson

    Anybody have any good recommendations?

    1. Historical fiction: Loving Frank by Nancy Horan

It’s about an adulterous love affair that Frank Lloyd Wright got into and it turned very messy – in many ways.

    2. Eowyn Ivey is one of my favorite historical fiction authors, usually with a touch of magical realism mixed into her stories.

If you like multiple timelines of Homegoing, you might also like Weyward by Emilia Hart. It’s got 3 POV characters from different times and shows how their stories interact. She’s also got a book coming in April called The Sirens.

And I know you don’t want classics, but if you’ve read and liked 1984 by George Orwell, you should check out Julia by Sandra Newman. It’s a 2023 retelling of 1984 and it was really enjoyable.

    3. “The Man Who Loved Children” by Christina Stead if you like dysfunctional family lit.

“Aquarium” and “Caribou Island” by David Vann if you want more.
