I have seen this online a lot over the years. I guess I'm lucky (so far) that people in my life accept that I'm an avid reader who also enjoys collecting books. But is that real? Has that ever happened to anyone where someone, doesn't necessarily have to be a significant other, asked you to choose between them and your books? Or maybe they just didn't like your reading habit in general?

No because they know I’d choose the books in less than a second.

?????
This is not something real people say
If they’re asking you that question then you probably hoard books and do nothing but read. But I doubt this is an actual thing.
I have never heard anyone say this ever, not online, nor in real life.
My one uncle told us that “reading makes you devil”. Instead of reading he told us to watch TV 🤦
His wife told us to get rid of our books because our home is filled with books everywhere.
My ex was not impressed by my love of reading and really did not appreciate the number of books in our home. He told me on more than one occasion, and I quote: “reading is dumb.” And also “can you get rid of some of these books?”
Anyway, now I’ve been single almost 4 years and I have more books than ever. 💅
I think it’s about context and severity.
Someone who has maybe 4 bookcases full to the brim has way too many books, but they’re organised and likely kept in good condition.
Someone who has 20 boxes of books they’ve left untouched is just hoarding and needs to give some to charity.
I doubt people view books as an antagonist in a relationship.
