Something that's short and sad would be ideal. Not necessarily something unimaginably tragic or something heartbreaking, but a book that's simply sad and gloomy and bleak. I would especially appreciate any recommendations that don't include lots of graphic content.

You might like some of Claire Keegan’s novellas, like Foster, which is about an Irish girl sent away to the country when her mother has a baby, or Small Things Like These, which is about the Magdalene laundries.
