Okay, weirdly specific one here. Does anyone know any historical fiction books where the protagonist is clearly written to have some kind of undiagnosed mental illness or personality disorder? Basically, the reader is able to recognise that the protagonist has it, except (because it is historical) it cannot be acknowledged or diagnosed in universe (at least by its modern name).
And by this I mean that it clear that the author is aiming for this characterisation, and it isn't simply an assumption or self projection from the reader (to use fandom terms: not a headcanon). It can be anything from prosopagnosia to OCD to depression (which would probably be under melancholia or hysteria depending on the time period).
Also, reminder that "historical fiction" does not apply to old literature set during the author's current time period. It has to be the author writing about a time period before their own.
Historical fantasy is also fine, just as long as it follows the criteria above
