I’m visiting Hawaii this Summer and would love some book recommendations about Hawaii. Rather that be the culture or history, I’m just intrigued to learn more about the state before heading there.
*And the View from the Shore* by Stephen H. Sumida is a comprehensive history of Hawaiian literature. *Aloha America* by Adria L. Imada is about how hula was made visible in the American mainstream; Amy Ku’uleialoha Stillman is a leading scholar who has also written a lot about hula.

Gifts of Civilization: Germs and Genocide in Hawai’i by OA Bushnell
Hawaii’s Story by Queen Liliʻuokalani (I believe her diaries and some other writings are published too)
