Any recommendations on books that would be good for a 7 year old who hasn’t really grasped the concept of reading for fun? My niece is turning 7 next week and she’s scoring low on reading. I think it’s because the only time she has a book in her hands is at bedtime and her parents still walk her through it. Her parents aren’t big readers so she doesn’t see anyone really reading for fun in front of her regularly. She’s not enjoying it and doesn’t really get the point. I want to get her some books that will be easy for her to read but also show her how fun it could be. I struggle with this because I was raised by English teachers so I was a pretty advanced reader at her age. I was already reading The Little Princess, The Secret Garden, and Anne of Green Gables. I was thinking of the Junie B Jones books but I don’t know if she is quite to that level yet. She’s in first grade.

Maybe read a choose your own adventure book with her, so she feels it’s more interactive?
I’d look for graphic novels on topics she’s interested in.
Came to suggest Junie B Jones – and it’s ok to have something a bit above where she is, it should foster growth and be something she can grow into.
A gift card to a book store may also be in order!
My son is 7 and also a reluctant reader, but he likes graphic novels. He really likes Dog Man and Cat Kid by Dav Pilkey and Diary of a Wimpy Kid.
Maybe the Fudge books by Judy Blume or the Amelia Bedelia series?
