I’m looking for a palette cleanser to read in between fantasy series, I love them but they are long and I think I need a little break. Looking for a 250-300 page, enjoyable read that I don’t want to put down. I like fiction and outside of fantasy enjoy something romantic or mysterious.
Thanks!

John Green “the Anthropocene Reviewed. “
SA Crosby “BlackTop Wasteland”
Andy Weir “Project Hail Mary”
Blake Crouch “ Dark Matter”
The Jack Reacher books by Lee Child
*D’Shai* by Joel Rosenberg. Fantasy loosely based on medieval Japan, but with magic. MC is a member of an acrobatic troupe, who gets caught up in a murder mystery.
For some reason your request brings the writer Connie Willis to mind.
She has a lot of lighter work, tending towards comedy of errors while exploring her chosen themes.
Cinnamon and Gunpowder
Novellas are a great idea. My favorites include:
The Tensorate series: two twins and their groups try to take down their tyrant mother who is a prophet. Deals with self acceptance, grief, free will, ECT.
The forever desert series: a series of novellas set in a desert that deals with false history, propaganda, ECT.
The singing hills cycle: a series of novellas about a cleric finding stories around the world. Each novel has a different story and can be read indipendently based on taste.
