Are there any Frederick Forsyth and/or Steven Hunter fans who can suggest similar authors? I just read a Vince Flynn book and loved it (I’m getting another from the library) but it’s not what I’m looking for. It reminds me a bit of Tom Clancy without the technical details. It was well written and engaging but the story was very straight forward and mostly predictable. I like surprise twists, especially when there are bread trails that are easy to miss that make it obvious when you read it the second time. I also love very clever characters like Hunter’s Bob Lee Swagger and Forsyth’s Mike Martin. I probably should point out that I find the second wave of Forsyth books to be very hit or miss – and there’s more misses than hits. The Afghan is by far my favourite of the new ones, which isn’t surprising since Fist of God is my favourite of the old ones. I very much enjoy the character and mystery of the assassin in The Day of the Jackal but I don’t love the rest of the book as much. Point of Impact is, and probably always will be, my favourite Hunter book.

The summarize for anyone who is not familiar with these authors, I’m looking for a suspense book that has clever characters (especially the main one but even better if the adversary is clever as well) and has surprise twists and turns along the way that are logical when you look back on them. Bonus points for something where the division between “good” and “evil” is a little blurry.

    Thanks for your thoughts!!
