I thoroughly enjoyed Jasmine Nights by S.P. Somtow, a coming of age novel with rich details about every day life in Thailand in the sixties and some magical realism. Anyone know any other other novels set in South-East Asia with such rich details and a dreamy atmosphere?
As a reference, I love Murakami because of his magical realism and his many details about daily food. I also like Mario Vargas Llosa.
