I remember the pure joy of being told we had library hour, and our teachers would drop us off at the library on school grounds and leave us for a whole hour to browse the shelves with just the librarian there ready to check out any books we wanted to take home. It was always exciting because I'd find a new addition to a series I was reading that had been returned by another child, or I'd just be able to pull out all the covers and look at them. We would have reading lists and we could fill out the books we read, and it was all just so wonderful. It was a cozy little corner to relax and escape into our own little world each week, and it was always met with reward to be reading a new book. I remember thinking when I got to 3rd grade and was reading bigger books, "so we get to come to the LIBRARY every week for a whole hour?!"

I loved my school library. It was a safe haven.
When you walked in and the big silver boxes were there, and you could smell the glue of the new scholastic books? It’s book fair week!
Nothing bad has ever happened to me in a library. They are sacred, like forests.
I get it, when a new library opened a block away from our home, I went on opening day. the sight of an entire library with new books brought tears to my eyes. I took my newborn there from before she could walk. it was an amazing place to sit, study, plan spend time with family. my kid ended up getting 2 masters degrees in English and is now teaching other children as a teacher. it just kills me that so many kids these days have rejected books in favor of social media.
