I love detective stories and murder mysteries, but a lot of the detective protagonists out there I find to be flat and boring, with little emphasis or thought out into the detective's inner world or greater development.
I don't just want to read about a murder mystery, I want to read about a person solving a murder mystery.
Big big bonus points for LGBT+ detectives++++++ (I've read the Hazard and Somerset series, I have mixed views about it but I did enjoy the main characters.)

Supernatural detectives? The Dresden files which has Harry Dresden a wizard / detective who definitely has a character arc .
ed mcbain’s 87th precinct is the best, john sandford’s prey series is another one. and if you don’t mint a shrink doing most of the sleuthing with a cop as a sidekick, there’s jonathan kellerman’s alex delaware series. his wife (faye kellerman) also has a series with two protagonists.
