I have a bookclub with my nine-year-old niece, and we just got finished reading The Mouse and the Motorcycle by Beverly Cleary. Out of the books we have read so far, this was her favourite. She felt like it was very engaging and the perfect length. She’s now reading more Beverly Cleary books on her own.
Does anyone have recommendations for books that are just as engaging as this one?

“Bunnicula” by Deborah and James Howe
“The Cricket in Times Square” by George Selden
Long way from Chicago is fantastic for that age and pretty short.
Because of Winn-Dixie
Trumpet of the Swan or Cricket in Times Square
that’s an awesome pick—and great taste for a 9-year-old
if she loved *The Mouse and the Motorcycle*, here are some next-step reads that bring the same energy:
* **“The World According to Humphrey” by Betty G. Birney** a classroom hamster with major main-character energy—funny, smart, light
* **“Pippi Longstocking” by Astrid Lindgren** wild imagination, big personality, total kid fantasy
* **“Clementine” by Sara Pennypacker** great pacing, lovable character, everyday mischief with heart
* **“My Father’s Dragon” by Ruth Stiles Gannett** classic adventure with a smart, brave kid and just enough danger
* **“Charlotte’s Web” by E.B. White** a little more emotional, but still engaging, sweet, and perfect for book club chats
* **“Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH” by Robert C. O’Brien** if she’s open to slightly more complex stories—animal characters, mystery, and depth
all have strong storytelling, great characters, and just enough challenge to keep her growing
Runaway Ralph, the sequel!
