As per title – I'd love suggestions for books for a teenage girl in my life who has dyslexia and ADHD but wants to start reading. She's fine with some gore and violence, but unsure how she feels about romance or fantasy. She's expressed interest in Colleen Hoover but not sure what she might have tried from her so looking for lesser known options.
Because she has dyslexia and ADHD, books should be fast-paced, not detail heavy, and really don't need to elicit a lot of contemplation. I'm a big reader and think I'll end up getting stuff that might accidentally be too deep and would then feel inaccessible and throw her off – pretty much any book is a good book if the alternative is no book, right?
I'm considering the following as books I've read and enjoyed (but open to critiques of choices):
– Station Eleven – Emily St. John Mandel
– Dark Matter – Blake Crouch
– His Dark Materials trilogy – Philip Pullman
– Song of the Lionness series – Tamora Pierce (though I think I might have missed the boat on this one)
– The Last Vampire series – Christopher Pike

I loved twilight when i was that age plz dont hate me ahaha. also, a walk to remember is a shorter story, its such a moving story. i also really loved “the help” that’s a thicker one but it reads easier. ohhhhh, a really good recent one is “my sister the serial killer” that was awesome, straight to the point writing, fast moving plot. I just read “the mad woman’s ball” and it was pretty decent, nice and short, but the plot got stagnant at times. i dont know if she would enjoy it yet but “convenience store woman” was really short and great. i have adhd btw and learning struggles so im giving you books i was able to get though because i have trouble focusing and hate when things move too slow. I really loved the first book in the dexter series at her age too, the first person was great for my adhd and i liked the narration style because dexter is really direct about his thoughts. I highly recommend all those titles but mad woman’s ball least of all so try the others first haha. my ranks on page turnability from most to least (though they were all finished and liked: my sister the serial killer, a walk to remember, dexter, convenience store woman, the help, mad woman’s ball.
My friends and I all have adhd, and we literally could not get enough of Hank Green’s An Absolutely Remarkable Thing! It is literally the most fast-paced, action packed and fun book that all of us had no problem reading. For dyslexia, perhaps try audiobooks (or perhaps alongside reading)? The audiobook for AART is incredible too, highly recommend.
As a fellow ADHD and dyslexic person. I would suggest audio books.
Books that she might like
Harry Potter
Dungeon crawler Carl
The wondering inn
Lord of the rings
Wheel of time
